•The maximum amount of power is determined by the amount of air (volume) cylinder can hold

 

•One way to increase engine power is to force more air into the cylinder (increase air pressure to increase the amount of air molecules that are in the cylinder)

 

•Supercharging: is just a  mechanically driven “blower” that adds air to the cylinders

 

•Think of this as an air compressor that is run by attaching a belt to your engine. The engine is turning the belt that provides the energy to the “air compressor” to force more air into the cylinders and make more power

•Turbocharging: An air compressor that is driven by the high pressure exhaust

–It consists of a two piece, high-speed turbine assembly with one side that compresses the intake air, and the other side that is powered by the exhaust gas

 

•Note: Both systems weigh more than a naturally aspirated engine, shorten the engine life, and require more maintenance, and increase the complexity of the system.
