Student Lessons & Information

Hello All,

This Page is a work in progress as always suggestions are appreciated. The PowerPoint's are all uploaded as well as quick reference links. Also, here are some great videos to get you started; most are from Robinson Helicopter Company. They are free of charge on Robinsons website, but they are a little more "out of the way" so they are linked below for your convenience.  Also, don't forget to grab yourself a copy of the R22 POH linked HERE

or the R44 POH linked HERE

Thrust and Lift

Thrust lift.png

•Thrust (horizontal motion aircraft), along with lift (vertical motion of the aircraft), is generated by the main rotor system

•In a helicopter, thrust can be in any direction (forward, rearward, side-ward, or vertical)

• The resultant (average) of lift and thrust determines the direction of movement of the helicopter.

Note: The pilot should climb and as they start to level off at the designated altitude, the pilot should first gain any airspeed that is required before reducing the collective.

As you can see in the above image if we increase airspeed (thrust) that will change the resultant and therefore shift the resultant (average) away from lift portion.

If the pilot does this in reverse (reduces collective and then gains airspeed) the lift will be reduced and then when trust is increased the resultant will be shifted to a decent.

The pilot will then be behind the aircraft and will require more control inputs to "catch up"
